2:50 PM Safety Response: Understanding Freight Rail Safety Responsibilities to Ensure Safety Excellence During the Construction and Completion of the Inland Rail

In 2016-17, ONRSR recorded 30 freight train line derailments across Australia, 13 of which occurred in NSW alone. While the consequences of the event are lower than passenger trains, risks along freight trains have higher occurrence and expose train crews, recovery teams and potentially the public to potential harm. As a result, consideration must be taken into account for the installation of tracks and construction undertaken by the contractors and operators to uphold the highest level of safety standards to minimise the risks that could occur along the Inland Rail once completed. In this session, Simon will discuss:

  • Ensuring the design, commissioning, manufacturing and supply of technical equipment and infrastructure for the project is carried through consistently across all 13 projects
  • Identifying a safety vision and safety management approach to ensure operators and workers comply with instructions to reduce risks
  • Application for the Inland Rail: How to commit to maintaining safety for land owners and local community members accessing the corridor
